Overton Covid 19 Project
INTRODUCTION
Background to the Project
Heritage Overton exists to ‘encourage and promote interest and research in Overton heritage’.
There are no records of the bubonic plagues which affected Overton between 1349 and 1660. When the Spanish flu came in 1918-1919 we know only that there was no social distancing and ‘about five’ people died of it before the Armistice.
The Corona Virus pandemic is ‘history in the making’. We therefore thought it would be good to gather the experiences of Overton people whilst it is fresh in our minds to compile a permanent record.
This project developed from discussions in February 2021 ‘that we are always creating history and we are creating a particular sort of history at the moment’ and to ‘invite people to send in their diary records or to write what they remember of these Covid days while it is still fresh in their minds’.
The Aim of the project was to record
- the coronavirus pandemic as experienced by the people of Overton civil parish and Overton businesses,
- the local initiatives to alleviate its effects, and
- the ways in which the pandemic changed people’s lives.
Heritage Overton invited contributions up to the end of July 2021 and we are very grateful to all those who responded.
Contributions have been edited and grouped by topics.
This project is ongoing and more material will be added as it is edited.
